The family confirms that John le Carré, whose real name is David Cornwell, died of pneumonia on Saturday night.

During his long career as a writer John le Carré wrote 25 novels, which sold a total of more than 60 million copies. The breakthrough came in 1963, with “The spy who came from the cold.” Le Carré’s latest novel “A Free Agent” was published in 2019.
In January 2020, he visited Stockholm in connection with the awarding of the Olof Palme Prize.

He was best known for “Karlatrilogin”, where the first book was “Mullvaden”, which was filmed in 2011 by director Tomas Alfredson under the original English title of the book “Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy”.
– This type of novels of agents did not exist before. They had the “James Bond” books by Ian Fleming, but they were lighter, he says.
When the Cold War ended, many believed that le Carré had ended as a writer, because that was his world.
– But it turned out he had a lot more books inside him. He went on to describe things like the international arms trade, banking, and pharmaceutical companies in Africa. It was strong social criticism in a novel way with very good research.
Jan Eklund himself holds it very high as a writer and thinks he should have received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
– I think he was one of the great contemporary writers. It was incredibly fun to read, there were exciting power intrigues, sharp dialogue, and highly entertaining readings.
