John le Carré died of pneumonia. He fell asleep at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in England after a brief illness.
“We are all deeply saddened by his passing.“, The family writes in a statement, according to The Guardian.
Meanwhile, his agent, Jonny Geller, has shared a long greeting to his colleague.
“He was 89 years old. Our hearts go out to his four children, their families, and his loving wife, Jane. John le Carré was an undisputed giant of English literature. He defined the era of the Cold War and faced power fearlessly for decades to come.“Writes Jonny Geller in his statement.
Acclaimed for his novels
1963’s “The Spy Who Came From The Cold” was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 best novels ever written.
George Smiley, who appears in several of John le Carré’s novels, has often been called one of the main characters in thriller literature. Le Carré created Smiley as a more realistic opposite of James Bond, whom he saw as a false image of the existence of spies and agents. Smiley is short, overweight, and bald, unlike the handsome and basically superhuman Bond.
Le Carré’s books have long been part of the British canon. But his work has also been given a moving life. In 2011, the critically acclaimed film adaptation of “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” was released under the direction of Swedish director Tomas Alfredson.
The film also has a predecessor in the 1979 television series of the same name. In Swedish, however, the title was translated to “Mullvaden”, which was also the Swedish name of the book.
John le Carré wrote a total of 25 novels during his long career. The books have sold more than 60 million copies worldwide.
