When the European Film Academy handed out this year’s awards on Saturday night, four of the biggest were for the Danish film “Another Round.”
– The film is dedicated to my daughter Ida, who died when we first started filming it, says director Thomas Vinterberg to TT.
– I think it’s a bit unfair that we have won so much. There were many other great movies. I want to share our awards with them, says the main character of the film, Mads Mikkelsen, in a comment to TT after the grand slam on Saturday night.
“Another Round”, in the original “Drink”, is a dark comedy that revolves around alcohol. Four middle-aged men start an experiment in which they are supposed to feel better if you increase the level of alcohol in your body a little every day. Little by little, the experiment begins to degenerate.
– From the beginning we had planned to make a film that looks at how much drunk people have done, a kind of tribute to alcohol. But we also thought about how alcohol can destroy and kill people, so we started looking at it too, says Thomas Vinterberg.
Lost his daughter
19-year-old Vinterberg’s daughter Ida would have had a role in the film, but a few days after filming began, she died in a car accident in France. His mother, Vinterberg’s ex-wife, survived. His car had been hit by a man looking at his cell phone.
– Of course, my world was destroyed. It crashed, says Thomas Vinterberg.
After all, it was decided that the movie would be shot, and it is now dedicated to Ida.
– For me, she is included in every painting. We filmed at his school, we filmed with his friends. Sometimes I didn’t handle directing work, then my colleague and co-writer Tobias Lindholm stepped in and directed, says Thomas Vinterberg.
“Another Round” is a very black comedy, and Thomas Vinterberg says the film’s actors made an effort to cheer it up.
– The four main characters are my friends and they did their best to keep me in a good mood. Many of the funny scenes in the movie occurred when four actors wanted to please their director.
Mads Mikkelsen had known Ida Vinterberg since she was a baby.
– We had a meeting and we agreed to make the movie. It became an extremely important movie for all of us. Now Ida is still alive. Some movies you make are good, some are good. This one turned out very well, he says.
Audience success in Denmark
“Another round” occurs in Sweden during the spring and, despite the pandemic, has been seen by some 800,000 people in Denmark. It is also Denmark’s contribution to next year’s Oscars, and Mads Mikkelsen is nominated for best actor.
Thomas Vinterberg says he thinks Mikkelsen deserves a nomination, but otherwise wants to be low in terms of hopes.
– I am a humble Dane, he says.
Mads Mikkelsen himself does not want to talk about the Oscar bus.
– I am very touched that so many people like our film. And I’m surprised because the competition was so great, he says.
