On Thursday, the Stockholm Region announced that the pressure on hospitals is high. 90 covid patients are treated in the intensive care unit and 690 in geriatric and emergency hospitals.
Today, Health and Medical Director Björn Eriksson fears that the heavy burden will persist throughout January.
– We have an extreme situation at the moment but almost 800 people are inside. And it seems that it will last longer than last spring, because this spread of the infection does not reduce anything. So hopefully more people will need care, says Eriksson.
Health in Stockholm
Compared to this spring, according to Björn Eriksson, more and more people are seeking care, not just covid patients.
– Normally, we have about 90 assistance centers in VAT. But now we have 90 patients with covid, then we have almost the same number who do not have covid who are in the intensive care unit. Fortunately, more people are seeking care for other illnesses than this spring. Unfortunately, many people refused care despite being ill.
“An impression we have never seen”
Now the region asks for help. On Friday, Eriksson met with some of the largest private care providers to express his desire to allow their employees to help out in hospitals in the region.
– Part of the VAT staff works 12-hour shifts. That is why we need trained health personnel, so that employees can recover and last longer. We will have to be strong throughout January too, if it continues at this rate as it is now, says Björn Eriksson and continues.
– It is a difficult situation, it is a pressure that we have never seen before.
