Dino Beganovic is living his dream. At Ferrari. In Italy.
For Sportbladet, he talks about the support of stars like Mick Schumacher, Charles Leclerc and team principal Mattia Binotto.
– It is very special to be a Ferrari driver and to receive advice from drivers who are in F1 or on their way there, says the 16-year-old from Linköping.
This spring’s move to Italy was delayed a bit due to the prevailing pandemic, but since Dino Beganovic moved to Maranello, he has gone straight into the heart of Ferrari. He is the first Swede to join the Ferrari driver academy, shares an apartment with F1 star Charles Leclerc’s little brother, Arthur, and feels right at home in the legendary F1 team factory in Maranello.
– All of us who are part of the Ferrari program have contact with each other, when the programs are appropriate we train together and we have had all a contact with the guys who drive in Formula 2, says Dino Beganovic.
Leclerc support
It is the Formula 1 series and this year it was dominated by drivers from the Ferrari Academy. Mick Schumacher, son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, won ahead of Callum Ilott while Robert Schwarzman finished fourth.
– We talk a lot about racing when we meet. They are fair and share their advice, maybe not the secrets outright, but more advice and support. They are so far above me in class and age that there is no direct competition.

He also says F1 star Charles Leclerc stepped up and saluted during the penultimate race weekend of the Italian Formula 4 championship. Then the Swede put in a brilliant effort and took three podium spots in as many races.
– He came to the grill and greeted me. It was hot. We are all Ferrari drivers and we have good contact. Is special.
First Swede at the Ferrari Academy
2020 is his first year as a formula car driver, there are big differences compared to the kart he was driving before and it has been a difficult process to go through.
This applies not only to the fact that you now drive a racing car, but also the fact that you moved from home to a country far from home, you do not speak the language fluently, but you have managed to get one of the driver’s seats most coveted in one of the most legendary stables in history.
– The year has been very educational. It’s been a lot to take in, everything from thinking about the right things when setting up the car to managing the teams on the track. Formula 4 is very different compared to karting and you have to be smart and planned in your driving, have knowledge of both the track and the car. It’s extremely difficult to think about everything while driving, says Dino Beganovic.
– But I still think that I have gotten used to it and during the end of the season I have been able to capture what I have learned.

Can you describe what it’s like to be a Ferrari driver?
– Now he has started to assimilate and it is a privilege to participate and speak with people like the head of F1, Mattia Binotto, and Laurent Meki, who is the sporting director. You are present at almost every meeting and it is special to be able to ask your questions directly. So our Marco Matassa is always there for us. He cares and we can talk about the situation, the races and the race.
Living his dream
Ferrari Driver Academy was started in 2009 and was inspired by the team’s founder, Enzo Ferrari, who once said that he wanted the team to still be able to create successful drivers and successful race cars. Drivers such as Jules Bianchi, Sergio Pérez, Charles Leclerc and Mick Schumacher have been trained by Ferrari to compete one day in Formula 1. In 2020, nine drivers have had the privilege of training at the academy and one of them is Linköping’s Dino Beganovic .
– I live my dream, he says.
– There is nothing I want more than to continue competing and developing at the Ferrari academy.
