The so-called Zodiac Killer has eluded the police since the 1960s. Now a group of enthusiasts has managed to decipher one of the messages the serial killer sent to a California newspaper in 1969.
He attacked young men, several of them couples on romantic excursions. One of them was on their first date, another was on a picnic blanket by a lake.
The killer then called the police and admitted his crimes, and also sent letters to various newspapers in which he described the brutal killings and made fun of the police.
Letters and symbols
Four of the letters consisted of advanced cryptograms, but until recently only one of them managed to be cracked. Now a trio of crypto enthusiasts have managed to crack another, a cipher consisting of cryptic letters and symbols sent to the San Francisco Chronicle in November 1969.
But it gives few clues as to who the killer is.
“I hope you have fun trying to catch me. I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise sooner, because now I have enough slaves that can work for me,” one of them now reads. decoded the lines.
Took years
An Australian mathematician, a Belgian logistician and an American web designer were asked to decipher the message. Together, decades passed and they used several different computer programs to successfully understand the Zodiac Killer codes, hidden in 340 symbols spread over 17 columns.
According to the encryption solvers, the encryption system used by the killer appears to be derived from a cryptography manual used by the United States Army in the 1950s.
The Zodiac killer killed at least five people in California between 1968 and 1969, but has claimed a total of 37 murders in the 1960s and 1970s. His actions have been described in both books and movies and are said to have inspired others. serial killers.
