James Yorkston’s new album “The wide, wide river” to be released on January 22 features Peter Morén (Peter Bjorn and John), Cecilia Österholm and the band The Second Hand Orchestra led by musician and producer Karl-Jonas Winqvist .

Cecilia Österholm is one of Sweden’s leading key harpists. She says the collaboration came after a concert with James Yorkston in Sweden, which Karl-Jonas Winqvist organized.

– Karl-Jonas arranged a concert with him and then he invited me and The Second Hand Orchestra. So we sat down and played and then just so spontaneously we said, “But can’t we go to the studio tomorrow and record the new James songs?” So we did it, completely unprepared, says Cecilia Österholm.

When they met the next day at Studio Rymden in Hjorthagen in Stockholm, the musicians had only heard one of the songs in advance. Therefore, the recordings relied heavily on improvisation, where James Yorkston unleashed the musicians.

– We played the songs a couple of times and then you had to find your patterns and the sounds or colors you liked. It was a very sensitive recording, we really sat down, listened to each other and complemented each other, says Cecilia Österholm and adds:

– James has a very nice way of being with people and creates a nice and fun atmosphere. It gave us a lot of freedom, so it was fun.
