Many books have been written and several films have been made about the Zodiac that murdered five people in California between 1968 and 1969. The serial killer gave himself the name in a letter to the San Francisco Examiner magazine.
“Dear Editor-in-Chief, this is Zodiac”, the letter begins.
Zodiac continued to send letters and postcards to newspapers, four of which were written with a code. The killer claimed that anyone who managed to crack the code would reveal their identity. Two readers finally managed to crack the code in various messages, but these did not reveal who Zodiac was, but only described how he felt about killing: “I like to kill people because it is more fun than killing animals in the forest.”
In April 1974, the last sign of life came from the Zodiac, where he claimed to be behind 37 murders, a figure that has been dismissed by the police as vain boasting. Despite the fact that more than 2,500 people have been questioned and there have been several suspects over the years, no one has ever been arrested for the killings. The murder investigation is still open.
The serial killer: “He will send me to paradise”
There has been another major mystery in the case beyond the identity of the Zodiac: One of the killer’s code messages, sent to the San Francisco Chronicle in November 1969, has never been deciphered. But now cryptologist David Oranchak, along with software developers Sam Blake and Jarl Van, have cracked the code.
– It feels very good. When I started studying the Code of the Zodiac many years ago, I thought, “I’m just making a computer program that solves it.” But the code has eluded me so far, David Oranchak tells the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Zodiac message, written without dots and 340 characters in English, says: I hope you have a lot of fun trying to catch me It wasn’t me on the tv show that makes me mention one thing about myself I’m not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise The faster the better for now I have enough slaves that can work for me. While everyone else has nothing when they come to paradise and are afraid of death, I am not afraid because I know that my new life will be easy in death’s paradise ”.
The FBI has reviewed and confirmed the trio’s findings.
