On the night of June 15, Reza, 20, was driving home from work when he was confronted by the 47-year-old and his two teenage sons, 15 and 17.

Family members were armed with a knife and Reza ran to a nearby bus to seek shelter. The three men followed him to the bus and began a brutal beating to death.

The bus driver who witnessed the incident said later in questioning:

– He was stabbed many times, I couldn’t even count.

– All three hit on the head and shoulders.

Previous conflict

Coroners were later able to establish that Reza had more than 90 knife wounds to his body.

The alleged perpetrators were arrested on the spot and the trial in which the three were charged with murder concluded recently.

On Friday, the Gällivare District Court announced its verdict in the case.

The father is sentenced to life imprisonment.

Minor children are sentenced to closed child custody for four and two years and eight months, respectively.

In a press release, the district court writes:

On the bus, the eldest son first began to beat the victim and then the father and the youngest son stabbed the victim to death with a large number of stabs. All three have been considered involved in such a way that they will be convicted of murder. “

The district court also declares that “the motive for the act has been to preserve the honor of the family.”

The investigation shows that before the murder there was a long-standing conflict between Reza and the 47-year-old man.

– The father experienced that Reza had had a relationship with the father’s wife, says chamber prosecutor Lindha Strömberg.

The 47-year-old and Reza ended up in several clashes with each other, according to the police investigation. In the time before the murder, several reports were made in which the two men claimed to have been beaten and threatened with death by the other.

Dad: “Women are our symbol of honor”

All those implicated in the murder have their roots in Afghanistan and the motive presented by the prosecutor relates to questions of honor.

During questioning, the 47-year-old man said:

– Our women are our symbol of honor, he crossed the border when he said that about my wife.

During the investigation and trial, he admitted many circumstances, but denied wrongdoing. Instead, he has claimed that he and his children only acted in self-defense.

– The humiliation I experienced last year. When someone comes and humiliates your honor […]. It has been the worst of my life. I can only say that we have only defended ourselves.

The prosecutor demanded that the 47-year-old be deported from Sweden. The district court rejects this on the grounds that there is a risk that he will be subjected to religious persecution in his home country, Afghanistan, because he has converted.
