Cross-country skiing: Sweden runs the Tour de Ski, despite Norway not

The Ski Tour starts in the Swiss Val Müstair from January 1 to 3. National team manager Anders Byström tells DN that one of the conditions for the green light is that corona infection has decreased somewhat in Europe.

– We have worked hard to find the most contagious solution possible. Own flight down and home, own hotel, own dining room. This means that we don’t have to meet any other human being at all. It’s a shame to say you don’t want to meet people, but that’s what it looks like today, says Byström.

The tour then continues in Italy, first in Toblach from January 5 to 6 and then ending in Val di Fiemme from January 8 to 10.

The Swedish message about the Tour de Ski comes after Sweden decided to forego this weekend’s World Cup competitions in Davos, Switzerland, as well as competitions in Dresden, Germany, from December 19-20.

– We have worked hard to minimize the risks of contagion in the workforce. Fis changes on site and our own on-site travel, accommodation and transportation planning has now been adjusted so much that I can be sure to give the go-ahead for the team to leave, says Dr Per Andersson in a press release.

Therefore, the Swedish medical team makes a different assessment than the Norwegian. Øystein Andersen, a medical officer for the Norwegian Federation, had this to say regarding Norway’s failure to do the tour the other day:

– The risk of infection in relation to trips to and during the Ski Tour has not changed significantly compared to our previous assessment. Traveling between countries in Europe during a pandemic carries an unacceptably high risk of infection.

Charlotte Kalla and Maja Dahlqvist There are two skiers who have opened up to participate in the tour, if they were given approval.

– Before, the tour was not included in the plan, but things have really become different this start of the season, Kalla, recently back to training after being sick in the covid-19, told Radiosporten.

– My basic plan from the beginning was not to drive it, but to race more before Christmas and then drive in Ulricehamn immediately after. But now the schedule is completely different, so now I’m also more optimistic about going on tour. If undone, of course, Dahlqvist told TT.

How did the passengers receive the message?

– I received a very happy solemoji from Charlotte Kalla. Everyone is happy with this message, Byström tells DN.

Are Swedish drivers worried about getting infected? Skiers like Johannes Høsflot Klæbo have expressed concern that it could affect lung capacity.

– For example, Charlotte has already had a crown and has shared how she experienced it. The virus can be devastating because it is unpredictable, some people have severe symptoms, and others suffer nothing at all.

– We will be very careful. Skiers will not be allowed to leave the rooms, except when they go to train and ski. We have been living like this for a long time.

The Norwegian medical team made a different decision and opted to forego the Tour de Ski. What do you think?

– You have to respect their decision. They have different quarantine rules than we have in Sweden, for example, they must be quarantined for ten days when they return home. You cannot compare our situations.

– We have made our assessment.
