Prisoner in the United States executed after criticized decision

Brandon Bernard, 40, was sentenced to death when he was 18 after he and four others murdered a couple in Texas in 1999.

The sentence followed a decision by the Trump administration, which is expected to greenlight four more death sentences before Joe Biden is sworn in as president on January 20. Otherwise, the decision to carry out the death penalty at the federal level is not typically made during the transition period until a new president takes office, a practice that has lasted for more than 130 years but has now been broken.

She received the support of Kim Kardashian

Brandon Bernard’s execution has been preceded by protests from, among others, Kim Kardashian West, who became involved in his case and used her social media channels to stop the execution.

The prosecutor who handled the case and advocated for Bernard to be sentenced to death also appealed for his replacement, as did five of the nine jurors who appeared at trial and are still alive.

But the protests were in vain. During the night around Swedish time on Friday, Brandon Bernard was executed.
