Public Health Agency: “A very serious situation”

The serious infection situation was highlighted at a press conference with the Swedish Public Health Agency, the Medical Products Agency, the National Board of Health and Welfare and the Swedish Civil Protection and Emergency Planning Agency on Thursday.

– 21 regions have reported to the National Health and Welfare Board and eight have reported on the status of reinforcement, five on the status of staff 20 of the 21 regions have reported an expected deterioration of the situation, says Iréne Nilsson-Carlsson, a public health adviser for the National Board of Health and Welfare.

Half are covid patients

He also explained that the situation in the country’s hospital is very tense, especially in intensive care.

– 49 percent of the country’s VAT patients are covid-19 patients, says Iréne Nilsson-Carlsson.

He emphasized in particular the difficult situation of the country’s municipalities, especially in the care of the elderly.

– It is a serious situation and there is a significant spread of the infection in several municipalities. There is a large lack of staff and it is a challenge for municipalities to manage it in their operations, says Iréne Nilsson-Carlsson.

So many have died

Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of department at the Swedish Public Health Agency, also emphasized the serious and worrying situation in the world.

Globally, there is still a very high number of reported cases and it does not appear to have decreased this week. 1.5 million have died worldwide, he said.

In Sweden, 58 new deaths with confirmed covid-19 have been reported, the Public Health Agency reported on Thursday.

Thus, a total of 7,354 infected people have died in the country.

A total of 312,728 people have been confirmed to be infected with covid-19 in Sweden.

In two weeks it will be Christmas and Karin Tegmark Wisell emphasized that the responsibility for how the infection is handled lies with all of us.
