A hunger pandemic worse than the crown is imminent.
Warn David Beasley, director of the UN food program, when the organization receives the Nobel Peace Prize digitally.
A Nobel Prize in the job? Yes, that was the case this year when the pandemic ended the grand celebration that usually takes place in Stockholm and Oslo.
– In a normal year, the town hall would have been full and the Norwegian royal family, the prime minister, the Storting politicians and other official representatives would have greeted him. And just as important: enthusiastic representatives of civil society had greeted him, said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in her congratulatory speech.
Digital celebration
Instead, this year’s Peace Prize was awarded digitally to the United Nations Food Program (WFP). The diploma and medal were sent to WFP headquarters in Rome, where the award ceremony also took place.
In his speech of appreciation, WFP Chief David Beasley called for action with the words “food is the way to peace”.
He noted that 270 million people around the world are at risk of starvation, and up to 30 million depend on food aid to survive.
– When you wake up in this rich, modern and technologically advanced world, it is hard to imagine that we would experience such a famine, but it is my tragic duty to tell you this: famine is on the threshold of humanity and threatens millions of people. the planet, he said.
“Covid-pandemic shadows”
David Beasley pointed out that food shortages destabilize nations and drive mass migration. Even if the famine itself does not receive as much attention, the consequences will be extensive.
– If we do not meet their needs, they will be victims of a famine pandemic that will overshadow the consequences of the covid pandemic.
