The Swedish Ice Hockey Association is looking for a replacement for Tomas Montén.
And according to information from Sportbladet, legend Daniel Alfredsson, 47, is the main track.
– We can’t come up with names that are relevant before we know we can bring them to the bubble in the province of Alberta, says national team coach Olof Östblom.
The youth crowns have been hit by a leadership crisis since four coaches tested positive and are not allowed to go to Edmonton. These are the captain of the national team Tomas Montén, the assistant coach Anders Lundberg, the goalkeeping coach Nizze Landén and the video coach Adam Almqvist.
A whole new administration staff must be built if Sweden is to have a junior WC team. Anders Eriksén, captain of the U18 team, has joined.
Tomas Monténs will help from home, but his place on the ice during training sessions and in the box during games must be replaced. A goalkeeping coach is also entering.
And a name that Sportbladet lives on is a really heavyweight that is the main track. Namely, Daniel Alfredsson with over 1,200 NHL games, an Olympic gold and a Swedish championship gold on the merit list.
After his active career ended in 2014, Alfredsson has not had a purely coaching assignment. He was an advisor to the Ottawa Senators for a couple of years and was also an advisor to Rikard Grönborg during the 2016 World Cup.
The old Tre Kronor center is also relevant
Olof Östblom does not want to confirm that Alfredsson is the main track:
– We cannot come up with names that are relevant before we get the go-ahead from the health authority there to take them to the bubble in the province of Alberta. To enter Canada, the person must be quarantined for two weeks, therefore the Swedes in the United States leave, says Olof Östblom.
Juniorkronornas returns Philip Broberg receives the message from Sportbladet:
– I choose not to comment so much on that because I don’t know if it’s true. I think everyone knows his name and that he was a very good hockey player. That would be a lot of fun, but I don’t want to comment more than that.
The fact that Alfredsson lives in Canada is, of course, a huge plus and a touch of a prerequisite for being able to break into the Edmonton bubble.
Another relevant name is that of former main player Andreas “Pastorn” Karlsson. He won the SHL 2005/06 scoreboard and also won World Cup gold the same season.
The Leksand-educated forward also has a handful of NHL seasons on the list of merits. For the past five seasons he has coached North America and for the past three years he has been an assistant coach for the Kitchener Rangers in the Canadian Junior League OHL. Therefore, he is used to working with junior players. Karlsson has also been a junior coach at Frölunda.
Is Andreas Karlsson a name you are looking at?
– We look at all Swedish coaches in Canada, says Östblom.
