530 out of a total of 573 applicants receive a state compensation of SEK 225,000 after being forced to sterilize by changing their legal gender. Show a report from Kammarkollegiet, P3 Nyheter reports.
– It can never replace the question of having children. And I think it is an important human rights issue, says Maria Sundin, 74, who has worked politically on the issue and has received compensation herself, to P3.
In 2013, the sterilization requirement was removed from the Gender Equality Act. According to Kammarkollegiet calculations, 650 people have had the right to claim compensation until May 2020.
For the 43 people who were rejected, the main reason is that they did not request a legal gender change when the sterilization requirement was applied.
