GOTHENBURG. The tactics gave Gothenburg a dream start.
Had midfielder Vilde Böe Risa had a choice, the team would have continued with a lot of pressure against Manchester City.
– Personally, I think we are more successful when we go with three up there, he says.
The tactic from the beginning was as clear as the cold in Gothenburg, the city that is hosting the Champions League final this spring. Coach Jörgen Ericson had the day before the meeting with the Manchester City national team language pointed out weakness: City’s desire to consistently play from goalkeeper to midfielders Alex Greenwood and Stephanie Houghton was mapped.
Initially, it was a successful Kopparbergs / Göteborg move. The attackers and one of the midfielders or a winger put a lot of pressure, sacked the British defenders, made mistakes and accentuated mistakes when they were looking for a pass to the inner midfield or back play.
Then Gothenburg won a serve high up in the offensive half of the field, creating the opportunity for the early lead goal.
“Don’t you dare step properly”
There were more chances in the first half as the tactics were favorable, but gradually the home team fell lower.
After the break, the team management rebalanced the team and that change gave Manchester City even more space against a newly composed baseline.
After the defeat, 1-2, in the Champions League game, midfielder Vilde Böe Risa was thoughtful.
– They wanted to play no matter how high we were. If we were in the penalty area, they still wanted to play. They were stressed out about it and they weren’t prepared for us to push that hard, he says, noting that the balance worked better with one baseline and not four defenders.
– So we don’t have much pressure. We dare not tread correctly. We were more successful in the first one, but then they understood how they would play us when we go with three and then we became vulnerable with Kullberg (Emma, center) only against one forward. But I still think that we can succeed with three in the press, he says and continues:
“I had to hunt a lot”
– All they want is access to the player in the middle, the central back (Walsh in midfield). It was seen in the midfielders that he was looking for her all the time. At first, when they weren’t allowed to record it there, they had a bit more trouble than others when they had to control that all the time. Personally I thought it was better in the first part, then I understood that they wanted to change because we were not well at the beginning of the second part.
Coach Mats Gren said after the loss that the choice of balance was not a given:
– The question was whether we would stay with three behind or would we play with four. As long as we managed to pressure them, but immediately when we failed to pressure their ball carrier, it became difficult to have three behind. We had to hunt a lot, says coach Mats Gren.
