An important message for Skövde and an important step for Volvo Cars. The automaker has decided to start producing electric motors under its own auspices.
Volvo Cars is investing in the manufacture of electric motors at the Skövde motor factory, the automaker writes in a press release.
The goal is set for “full in-house production of electric motors by the mid-2020s,” the company writes. To achieve this, Volvo Cars is planning investments of SEK 700 million ”. In the first phase, the plant will install electric motors. At a later stage, Volvo Cars intends for a full-scale electric motor manufacturing process to take place in Skövde, “writes Volvo Cars.

Siemens electric motors today
Today, Volvo uses Siemens electric motors in the XC40 P8 Recharge electric car.
Earlier, development manager Henrik Green told Ny Teknik that Volvo will only develop a single type of electric motor rather than a full range of models. At present, one type of solution is used on the smaller CMA platform (on which the XC40 is built) and a larger one on the SPA platform, on which the XC90 is built, among other things. In the updated SPA2 platform, on the other hand, there will be self-developed electric motors.
Henrik Green has also said that the focus will be on efficiency for longer range rather than maximum performance.
The electric motor is a key component
Volvo now believes that the electric motor is a key component, which is one of the reasons why it will be developed and, in the future, also manufactured in-house.
– The prediction three or four years ago was that you could buy a “ready to use” solution, but 1.5-2 years ago we came to the conclusion that the electric machine is a key factor in the electric car. We need to build competition and understand ourselves and how we can control technology with software, Henrik Green has previously said.
The production of internal combustion engines in Skövde will be transferred to a separate subsidiary within the Group, called Powertrain Engineering Sweden. It will eventually merge with Geely’s product of internal combustion engines.
Volvo aims for half of all cars sold by 2025 to be pure electric cars, the rest hybrids.
