United failure – the Champions League result

Group H would be decided. RB Leipzig and Manchester United (who faced each other), as well as Paris Saint-Germain, were nine points behind before the final round. PSG faced İstanbul Başakşehir, who was last in the group, and was considered to have the best starting position, making it ideal for a really exciting match between Leipzig and United. United needed a point to move on and Leipzig needed a win.

It wouldn’t be many minutes before Leipzig surprised United. After a brief fight with the defender, Marcel Sabitzer finally got the ball home.

Minutes later, it was 2-0 too, and United’s nightmare start only got worse. Striker Angeliño hit a perfect cross that Amadou Haidara struck perfectly at the far post with his right foot.

Emil Forsberg would get an overlap to basically decide the game and make it 3-0, but the Swede didn’t get a good shot and missed the goal. This ended the first half 2-0.

With the clock on in the 70th minute, United player Bruno Fernandes fell dramatically outside the penalty area. And minutes later the 3-0 would arrive. Angeliño hit a post that Christopher Nkunku led to replace Justin Kluivert, who contributed 3-0.

With just over ten minutes to go, United received a dubious penalty, and Fernandes made no mistakes from eleven meters and made it 1-3. And a few minutes later they also made it 2-3, when Paul Pogba reached the top of a corner.

But that was not enough. Leipzig won 3-2 and the result means they advance to the playoffs, and United lose the advance, which means Europa League games.

– We have to look at ourselves, we gave ourselves too much to do. You saw how close we were to the end, but we started too badly and we can’t keep falling behind, Harry Maguire tells BT Sport and continues:

– I don’t want to talk about excuses. We have to go out and be aggressive, win balls. These are the basics. If he cannot defend the positions, he will lose games. I don’t want to blame the lineup, that’s not an excuse.
