With the help of maps that the Armed Forces themselves publish on their website, it is possible to find secret military installations, reports DN.
On the Armed Forces website, there are maps of each county where areas of national interest, areas where there are secret facilities, storage and the like are marked. With that information, it is easy to find facilities with the help of a satellite imagery mapping service.
Until 2013, the Armed Forces sent similar maps directly to county administrative boards in classified letters. Today, instead, they are open online. Several experts DN spoke with said the maps are a good help in the pile for those who want to spy on Swedish defense capabilities.
– Sweden is fantastic and the Armed Forces are even more fantastic. Here you are given systematic information with good maps of all the counties. It is a gateway to protected objects. Rather than searching all of northern Skåne, you can search three concentrated areas. Saves a lot of work, says Wilhelm Agrell, DN’s senior professor of intelligence analysis.
The Swedish Armed Forces tell DN that the maps do not reveal any detailed information about the facilities or what they do. Just because you can see something on a map does not necessarily mean that you see what is worthy of protection, according to the Armed Forces.
