Father Viktor dropped off his children, ages 5 and 8, at the airport.

“I don’t have money or food to give the children. I’ll pick you up later, ”he wrote and flew off to find work.

Now he has been sentenced to 15 months in prison.

On January 26, 2020, Viktor Gavrilov, 41, flew from Khabarovsk to the Russian capital Moscow with his children. At Sheremetyevo airport, Viktor changed planes and flew to Rostov-on-Don.

He left both children. After a while, airport staff found the young children abandoned. In a backpack the father’s brief message was found:

“I beg you not to be separated from the boys. Forgive me, but right now I have no other way out,” Gavrilov wrote.

A few days later, the father voluntarily sought out the Prosecutor’s Office, who recorded a video and posted it on YouTube. The father spoke directly to the sons in the film:

“I showed weakness and was afraid I would not be able to support myself. That is why I left you at the Moscow airport. I knew there were many people around who would take care of you. I hope to find work and return with you, so that we never have to part again,” he said in the video.

Punished for causing danger and theft

Viktor Gavrilov had previously worked for private security companies, sometimes elsewhere. When she was away, she had left her two children at the Khabarovsk Region Social Assistance Center. When the jobs were done, he always came back and took the children home. The children’s school and kindergarten in the hometown of Komsomolsk-na-Amure declared in January that the children were always well dressed, well fed and curious.

The court in his hometown has sentenced Viktor Gavrilov to 15 months in prison for causing danger and robbery. The day before the flight to Moscow, he had cheated on a retired woman, whom he knew, for 100,000 rubles. This corresponds to approximately SEK 11,000.

Viktor Gavrilov admits the theft, but not that the children were in danger. He claims that the Moscow airport was a “safe place”, according to the Meduza newspaper.

The two children live today with their grandmother. The parents have been divorced for a long time and the father was awarded custody after the divorce. The mother had reportedly failed to fulfill her parental obligations.
