Initial vaccination in the UK will be carried out with the crown vaccine from Pfizer / BioNTech, but the country would also receive 30 million doses of the Astra Zeneca and Oxford University vaccines before the turn of the year.
Now UK authorities say vaccine production has run into trouble and only 4 million doses will be delivered in 2020.
– There have been some challenges (for British manufacturing). That is why there have been some delays in delivering doses, says Ian McCubbin, head of the UK vaccine unit, according to the newspaper.
“It took longer than expected”
Astra Zeneca isn’t the only vaccine manufacturer that has struggled to deliver vaccines as planned.
Late last week, Pfizer / BioNTech announced that they will only be able to deliver about half of the 100 million doses that would be delivered before the turn of the year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
– It took longer than expected to scale the raw material supply chain. And it’s important to note that the results of the clinical trials took a bit longer than planned, a Pfizer spokesperson told the newspaper.
