LONDON. Today, Britain began vaccinating its residents against Covid-19.

Margaret Keenan, 90, received the first injection.

– I feel privileged, she tells Birmingham Live.

Corona vaccination begins today in the UK, which last week became the first Western country to approve Pfizer’s covid-19 vaccine.

Margaret Keenan, 90, of Enniskillen was the first to receive the vaccine, the BBC reports. She says she feels “very lucky.”

– I feel very privileged to be the first person to be vaccinated against covid-19. It’s the best anticipated birthday gift I can think of because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends after being alone for much of the year, Keenan says according to Birmingham Live.

25 million in risk groups

Mass vaccination begins in hospitals, and priority is given to residents and employees in nursing homes, people over 80, and employees in health and care.

Approximately 800,000 doses of vaccines, which are sufficient for 400,000 people, arrive in the UK during the week. When the highest priority groups have been vaccinated, it is time for people over 75 to continue their way up a ladder of risk groups in nine steps.

If the availability of doses does not decrease, and the Astrazeneca and Moderna vaccines can also be approved soon, the British government hopes to have vaccinated all nine priority groups before the end of February. That would mean 25 million vaccinated Britons in the risk group, preventing 99 percent of COVID-19 deaths, writes the Independent.

“Despite the great complexity, hospitals will now begin the largest vaccination campaign in our country’s history starting Tuesday,” said Professor Stephen Powis, NHS National Medical Director, in a statement on the NHS website. NHS.

“Historic week”

It will take until the end of this spring for more Britons to be vaccinated and Health Minister Matt Hancock urges residents of the country to continue to distance themselves and follow the restrictions.

– Next week will be historic when we start our vaccination against covid-19, he says.

– We do everything we can to make sure we can overcome the great challenges of vaccinating nursing home residents as soon as we can.

– I urge everyone to participate in suppressing the virus and to follow local restrictions to protect the NHS as they carry out this important work.
