The Pope is giving Vatican employees painkillers as a Christmas present this year. Here, a Christmas tree is placed in front of the church of San Pedro.

The 4,000 Vatican employees will not receive a Christmas bread – Italian panettone – from the Pope this year. Instead, everyone receives a packet of pain relievers in time for Christmas.

The package says it is a gift “from the Holy Father for Vatican employees (five boxes per employee),” according to images obtained by the daily Il Messaggero.

Pope Francis has raised his voice against consumerism and has seized many opportunities to show a more pragmatic side. Besides the corona pandemic, it has recently been cold and rainy in Rome and the seasonal flu vaccine has been delayed in Italy.

During the year, the Vatican’s tourism revenue also declined.
