Plates and cups made from a mixture of bamboo or corn flour and plastic can be hazardous to your health, the National Food Administration writes in a press release.
Products, which are often intended for children, have appeared more and more in recent years and are often marketed as environmentally friendly.
The EU’s food alert system, RASFF, has warned that there are products of this type that release melamine and formaldehyde in food at such high levels that they can harm health.
In the EU, it is not allowed to mix vegetable fibers such as bamboo or corn and plastic in products that come into contact with food.
“There is plastic made to come into contact with food and it is allowed to make dishes in pure bamboo, it is a combination of these materials that is not allowed,” says Maria Florin, head of the food safety department of the National Food Administration, according the press release.
The products mainly release melamine and formaldehyde when they come into contact with liquid food that is over 70 degrees of temperature for a long time. Especially for young children, it presents a health risk with repeated use.
Melamine can affect the urinary tract and formaldehyde has been shown in animal experiments to affect the stomach region.
