According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, children are not a driving force in the spread of infection. At the same time, in the future they may be the group that maintains the spread, after the adult population has been vaccinated.
Jan Albert is a professor of microbiology and infection control at Karolinska Institutet, and explained this in a previous interview with Expressen:
– In the future, children who are added, and who have never had infections before, are likely to be responsible for more of the spread of infection.
Pharmaceutical company Moderna, which is behind one of the candidate vaccines that is very close to being approved, will soon begin testing its vaccine in children, the New York Times reports.
3,000 children and young people between the ages of 12 and 17 will participate in the study.
Needed with vaccine for children.
Matti Sällberg, professor and vaccine researcher at KI shares the image and says that it will be necessary to vaccinate children to have complete control of the virus.
– Fortunately, children do not seem to get that sick, but if you want to control the spread “long term”, you need it.
He is convinced that testing in children will begin in the spring.
Do children and adults react differently to vaccines?
– No, I wouldn’t say that. Children often have slightly immature but still very good immune systems.
So why are children assessed as a separate group?
– This is exactly what you have to do, test it in clinical studies in children before you can start giving it to children. You are more careful with children, it is not strange. One of the most important factors is that they cannot answer for themselves, but it is the tutor who decides. All studies like this are based on informed consent, and a child has a little difficulty understanding, says Matti Sällberg.
Kenneth R Chien said in the Swedish Radio interview that he hopes the corona vaccine will be given to babies, like a diphtheria or rubella vaccine. But it’s too early to say, says Matti Sällberg:
– We do not know anything about the effects that we can expect from the vaccine that we are applying now.
