Slipknot will be the highlight of a new great rock festival in Malmö

Malmö will have a new big rock and metal festival this summer, pandemic permitting. It’s now clear that the organizers behind Big Slap are releasing Rock Slap and the big draw this summer is American Slipknot.

In live music’s darkest times, news arrives bearing witness to brighter times. This summer’s music festivals were canceled and so was the Big Slap festival in Malmö. The entire lineup of musical acts has moved into next summer, so the plan is for the Black Eyed Peas, Rita Ora, Bad Bunny and more to be on stage at Tallriken in Pildammsparken from July 30-31 next year. The only act that couldn’t carry over to next year’s Big Slap was Wizkid, who will be replaced by another name in January.

But now it turns out that two days of Big Slap will be followed by a Rock Slap on Sunday 1st August.

– We use the same venue and the same production, but we focus on rock and metal, says Ali Eftekhari, founder of Big Slap.

Behind the decision is the big problem which was featured earlier this year when Big Slap was bought by the live giant All Things Live. Within that organization is also David Maloney, who previously directed Maloney Concerts and performed large concerts in, among other things, the metal genre.

Rock Slap will be a one-day festival on August 1 with four or five musical acts and the only name that is official now is the drag patch: American Slipknot. The Iowa band has been around for 25 years this year and is perhaps best known for their habit of performing live in masks and overalls. The 1999 debut album “Slipknot” remains their best-selling album.

– Slipknot is one of the most important bands of its genre and it was when we got ready with them that we knew the festival would end, says Ali Eftekhari.

– We want to create a festival that has not existed before in Malmö, but where we still know that there is interest and public. So whether it will be a pure metal festival or more rock and metal, it will have to give in over time. The important thing is that all the artists at the festival must work together, says David Maloney.

How long do you think with the festival?

– The ambition is to make a recurring festival during this particular period of the year. August is a good month for a festival like this and Tallriken is an incredibly cool place to have a festival, says David Maloney.

How can you plan a summer festival in these uncertain times?

– It’s very different. But at the same time, we have to do “business as usual” if we want to be able to implement things this summer. But covid is definitely our biggest opponent right now, says Ali Eftekhari.

Tickets for Rock Slap will be released on Thursday, December 10.
