The largest party according to a poll, however, will be the contender for power, the Social Democratic PSD. There, PSD gets 30.5 percent of the votes and PNL 29.0 percent.

In another polling station poll, the roles are reversed: 32 percent for NLP and 28 percent for PSD.

Both measures give the newly formed USR-Plus about 16 percent, which would strengthen its growing influence in Romanian politics; an alliance with NLP is at stake.

Official election results expected only on monday.

Ludovic Orban has led a minority government in parliament for the past year. Before the elections, he promised to modernize Romania, which is one of the poorest countries in the EU, and keep the country on a “pro-European” path.

NLP has the advantage of having the endorsement of President Klaus Iohannis. He has been criticized for failing to respect his constitutional role as an NLP activist.

As recently as Friday, the president criticized the PSD, saying he hoped Romania would distance itself from those who have tried to divert the country from its European and democratic course.

The PSD was born out of the former Communist Party and has dominated Romanian politics for the past 30 years. In the 2016 elections, the party won a landslide victory. But after party leader Liviu Dragnea was sentenced to prison for corruption, the PSD lost a vote of no confidence in 2019 and lost power.
