Albin Ekdal scored for his Sampdoria at home against Milan.

It was his first goal in 1,372 days.

But that wasn’t enough for Sampdoria and it was a 1-2 loss to league leaders Milan.

March 5, 2017. That was the last time Albin Ekdal scored a goal. Sunday night it was time again.

The Swede jumped to the break at a 0-1 disadvantage and when the score was 0-2 for Milan, the 31-year-old scored. In the 82nd minute, an error by the local left defense allowed Ekdal to take the lead and overtook the local goalkeeper, adding another goal for the visitors.

But the goal would not be enough to score.

Ekdal close to his second goal

Albin Ekdal was also close to scoring his second goal when a great situation emerged for the Swede in the closing seconds of the match. Ekdal was completely unmarked in the penalty area, but controlled his heading just outside.

Milan held on and won 1-2. The winner of the match was Spaniard Samuel Castillejo, who with his first touch of the ball in the match knocked down the visitors 0-2 in the 77th minute.

– I have to be honest, I thought we had closed the game. I was wrong! Then we let in a goal and it was open until the end, says Milan coach Stefano Pioli after the match, according to Football-Italy.

“Zlatan has helped us to improve”

At the press conference, Pioli also took the opportunity to point out how much Zlatan Ibrahimovic has meant for the team. The Swede is injured right now and missed tonight’s game.

– We all know how much Zlatan has helped us improve and everyone wants him back. We are a great team, but the more individual talent the better.

The result means that Milan retain the league lead in Serie A with five points behind second-placed Inter after ten rounds played.
