Malin’s medical abortion did not take place.
But it was not noticed until a month later, when she, for safety reasons, contacted the health service and saw a healthy fetus on ultrasound.
– I had decided and made this decision. But when I got a chance to keep this baby, I felt terrible.
Malin, whose real name is another, lives on the outskirts of Stockholm. He is 39 years old and has three children. When she got pregnant in the fall, it was pretty obvious for her to have an abortion.
– It would be better this way for everyone. It would be stupid to have another child, we are in the middle of a move and we will separate, he says.
Therefore, in early November, she underwent a medical abortion, the most common method of terminating a pregnancy that involves taking two medications, one that stops the pregnancy and two days later another that triggers contractions of the uterus and makes that the fetus is shocked. outside the body.

I did not want to overwhelm the care
– After a few weeks, I felt like it might not have turned out quite right, but since it’s a pandemic, I didn’t want to charge attention. I thought maybe there were only hormones left, you might feel bad a few weeks later, says Malin and continues:
– I could never believe that I was still pregnant with a live fetus. So I thought I could wait a bit, the corona infection increased and I really didn’t want to overload the attention.
But as time passed, Malin began to feel worse. Mornings are spent in front of the bathroom and, as a mother of three, she recognizes the symptoms. Finally, he called the emergency room to ask if he could come in.
– It’s scary. If I hadn’t started feeling so terribly bad and so incredibly pregnant, I probably wouldn’t have gotten in. So she could have been standing there at the end with a baby that was too big to abort, she says.

Regret the ultrasound
At the hospital, Malin was treated well, he thinks. But nothing could have prepared her for what the doctor would say. The boy was healthy, had a good growth curve and a heart that clapped “as it should.”
– The doctor said that it would be good for you to look at the ultrasound to really understand what had happened, that the fetus was still alive. I’m sorry I did it today, because there I saw arms and legs, even a nose. Maybe I wish I could have a counseling call or something, says Malin.
On Monday the abortion will finally be completed. Malin was quickly given time to scrape, something that is only possible until the third month of pregnancy that Malin is now in. You dare not have another medical abortion, what if something goes wrong again and the fetus continues to grow?
– I had decided and made this decision. But now that I’ve had a chance to stay with this kid, it feels awful. I don’t really feel ready to do the scraping on Monday, at the same time I have to do it now before it’s too late, she says.

Gynecologist – extremely unusual
The risk that the pregnancy will continue despite a medical abortion is between 0.1 and 0.3 percent. That’s what Helena Kopp-Kallner, a gynecologist at Danderyd Hospital and a researcher at the Karolinska Institutet, says.
– So incredibly boring for the patient. I hope she feels well cared for in the end, she says.
– It is extremely unusual. But that’s why we tell women to take a home pregnancy test after two to four weeks so they have enough time to have a new abortion, says Helena Kopp-Kallner, a gynecologist at Danderyd Hospital and researcher at Karolinska. Institutet.
– If it is positive, we want to meet the woman as soon as possible, whether she is pandemic or not. Until you get a negative pregnancy test, you can’t be sure, says Helena Kopp-Kallner.
Few pregnancies are so advanced because of this that an abortion is no longer possible, says Helena Kopp-Kallner. But it is always important to contact the clinic immediately if you suspect something is wrong.
– It is so unfortunate and sad when women think that you should not bother. That should not be the case. Abortion care should be a priority and this has been done throughout the pandemic, she says.
