For 28 seconds, Romain Grosjean was trapped in his burning vehicle.
Fully aware of what was happening around him.
– I was relieved when I got out of the car and felt that someone was touching me, then I realized that it was like a ball of fire, he says.
Still, he wants to race the F1 final next weekend.
The Bahrain GP had just started when Romain Grosjean lost control of his Haas and crashed into the railing. That was five days ago.
Now tell what really happened.
– I had a really good result in Turn 1 and there was no one next to me, however a lot happened to the left. I look in the mirror and there is still no one on the right, I see a hatch and I drive. I know it was quite aggressive choosing that track, he says during an online press conference.
– But in Bahrain you can get off the track and when you think about it, what I did was not so crazy. Unfortunately, the rear view mirrors are not the best technical detail in Formula 1.
Grosjean was caught on fire
He never saw AlphaTaurin coming obliquely behind him. Daniil Kvyat was at a standstill and the coup was inevitable. Grosjean was driving at more than 220 km per hour when the collision occurred, the car ran like a projectile against the railing, pierced it, broke into two parts and began to burn.
– I never panicked. I knew exactly what to do, I don’t know if it’s congenital or if I trained it, but it saved me.
The first thing he did after the blow was to unbuckle his seat belt, he also thought that he had taken off the steering wheel, but later they have told him that he stayed in the accident.
– As I was leaving I hit my head, I turned left and hit my head again. It burned everywhere, I didn’t have time to wait. I thought of Niki Lauda and tried to get out, but I got stuck, he says.

Niki Lauda’s thought
Lauda was seriously injured after an accident at the Nürburgring in 1976, he was trapped in the burning car for several minutes and, although he survived and returned, the accident marked him forever. Grosjean struggled for nearly half a minute to get free.
– Suddenly the body relaxed, a calm came and I thought I was going to die. I wondered where it would start to hurt, but then I thought about my children and that they shouldn’t lose their father, not today anyway, he says.
– I kept trying to let go and, as I was, I got off his shoulders. I saw my red gloves and one of them was completely black from fire. I was relieved to be out of the car and felt someone touch me. Then I noticed that it was like a ball of fire.
He later saw the photos and admits that he also finds them scary.
– If you had seen those photos and it was another driver who drove the car, you would have guaranteed to think that the driver died.
You want to run the end of the season
Romain Grosjean escaped with burns to his hands and foot. He left the hospital on Monday and watches this weekend’s competition in Bahrain. There he is replaced by Pietro Fittipaldi. He wants to drive himself until the end of the season next week in Abu Dhabi.
– I want to do it because this is my life. I want to finish my career in Formula 1 crossing the finish line and not during a day like that in Bahrain. Although it’s not that dramatic when a Haas races over the finish line somewhere on the field, that’s what I want, he says.
Doctors have not yet been able to give him any information on whether it is possible to drive F1 in a week, but the injuries heal and he feels better with each passing day.
– No one knows how quickly burns heal, I’ve learned that. When the skin is gone, you see things you don’t want to see, but I hope that every day the healing process goes faster than the day before, she says and adds.
– I have told my family that I drive in Abu Dhabi. They didn’t like it, but I explained that I have to be selfish and try, for my own good.
