Refugees from Tigray in Ethiopia have moved to neighboring Sudan.
Reports of fighting in northern Ethiopia’s Tigray state make it difficult for the UN to begin distributing emergency aid, despite the government’s authorization to access the region.
– We receive reports that fighting continues in many parts of Tigray. It’s worrying and it’s a complicated situation for us, says Saviano Abreu of the UN coordinating body OCHA.
Thousands of people have died in the armed conflict between the central government and Tigray, which erupted about a month ago, according to the International Crisis Group. Tens of thousands have fled to neighboring Sudan.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed proclaimed victory a week ago, claiming that the regional government, the Tigran People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), had been crushed. But the TPLF has announced that the armed struggle continues.
The UN has warned that a humanitarian catastrophe may be imminent in the region.
