It will be a Christmas with virus restrictions in Italy. No travel between regions will be allowed, the ski slopes are closed, and the midnight fair is something to forget.
“It is clear that it will be a different Christmas, but it will be no less authentic,” Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told a news conference.
– We must not lower our guard now that Christmas is approaching.
The stricter rules regarding Christmas celebrations were announced on Thursday, when Italy also recorded the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in one day in the country during the entire pandemic. Conte asked Italians to respect the restrictions and not invite any Christmas guests, to avoid a third wave of coronavirus in January.
Limited trips
Between December 21 and January 6, travel between different regions will only be allowed for work, medical or emergency reasons. On Christmas Day, the second day of Christmas and New Year’s Eve, Italians are not even allowed to leave their city.
Anyone traveling to Italy around Christmas must be quarantined for two weeks. Hotels may be open, but they must close their restaurants on New Years Eve and can only serve dinner in the rooms.
It was previously known that the ski slopes will remain closed until January 7. Cruise ships cannot dock in the country’s ports either. In some regions, restaurants can stay open until 6 p.m., but in other parts of the country, only take-out is allowed.
Regional critic
The new measures are criticized by regional authorities who say they have not been consulted by the central government. They are critical of the fact that the new measures hit families hard and do not compensate difficult companies.
Italy has been hit hard by the pandemic. More than 1.6 million confirmed cases of covid-19 and more than 58,000 deaths have been registered.
