On Friday, 1,600 refugees were shipped to the island of Bhashan Char.

The Bangladeshi authorities have sent 1,600 Rohingya from Myanmar on boats to take them to the flood-threatened island of Bhashan Char.

The relocation of the refugees, who were living in deplorable refugee camps in the Cox’s Bazar area, to the port city of Chittagong began yesterday, according to the AFP news agency.

Chancellor AK Abdul Momen describes it as an improvement for those able to move to Bhashan Char, where housing has been prepared. At the same time, local residents on the very flat island testify that it has been flooded at some point.

Human rights organizations have warned that many are skeptical of the move and that people are being moved against their will. That image is confirmed by AFP.

Families now on boats through the Bay of Bengal are leading the controversial relocation of a total of 100,000 people.
