The world’s largest turtle eggs found
In Ecuador a nest with eggs of the endangered giant leatherback has been found. The find is unusual, and now authorities hope the tiny giants can hatch.

The nest with eggs was found in the province of Manabí. The authorities do not want to indicate how many eggs are in the nest. To prevent further disturbance by people, a protective barrier has been installed. A thermometer has also been installed.
This is only the third time in the last five years that a nest with eggs has been found along the coast of Ecuador. On the previous two occasions, 2015 and 2017, none of the eggs hatched. The eggs that have now been found should hatch within two months if all goes well.
The leatherback turtle is the largest sea turtle in the world, it can grow up to three meters long and weigh up to a ton. The species is in danger and runs the risk of disappearing altogether.
– If the eggs hatch, it would be a historical fact because the species is very special and is exposed, says Paco Castro, head of the environmental authority in the region where the nest was found.
The leatherback turtle generally lays its eggs on beaches in Africa and America. From time to time, some copies of this bug also reach Scandinavia.
