California’s most populous state in the United States is marking new restrictions as a result of the pandemic.
The restrictions go into effect when intensive care units are occupied at 85 percent or more, which is expected to happen in four out of five regions within a few days.
Residents are then urged to stay home and not meet people outside their home, according to Governor Gavin Newsom. Bars and hair salons will be closed and unnecessary travel is expected to be restricted.
Residents affected by the tightening will be warned two days before the restrictions take effect. Thereafter, the restrictions apply for at least three weeks.
– If we do not act now, our health system will be overloaded. If we don’t act now, we will continue to see the death toll rise, Newsom says in a video.
The United States has more than 100,000 hospitalized people, of whom nearly 6,900 are currently receiving respiratory care, according to the Covid Tracking Project.
According to the Johns Hopkins University compilation, there have been 210,000 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours, the highest daily figure to date during the pandemic. 2,907 people died from covid in the United States during the same time period.
