The planned execution of Ahmadreza Djalali in Iran has been postponed, his wife Vida Mehran Nia told the AFP news agency. However, according to Amnesty, the risk of the death penalty occurring soon remains high.

She says the information comes from Djalali’s lawyers, who say that the Iranian authorities have decided to postpone the execution “for a few days.”

Vida Mehran Nia also says that Djalali has not yet been transferred to Karaj Prison where the execution would take place. She believes the reason has to do with “political issues”, but what it means is unclear.

It should have been moved Tuesday afternoon.

– I honestly don’t know, but at least we have some hope, says Mheran Nia in Stockholm.

Amnesty confirms information from Vida Mehran Nia that the execution of the execution has been postponed.

– We appreciate this, but as there are no further details, we still believe that there is a great risk that Ahmadreza Djalali’s death sentence will be carried out shortly, says Maja Åberg, Human Rights Expert at Amnesty Sweden.

He adds that the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with other EU countries, should now step up their efforts to stop the execution. TT seeks the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Swedish-Iranian investigator Djalali has been sentenced to death in Iran for espionage in a criticized trial.
