In an extension of the country’s restrictions to curb the spread of the infection, bars, restaurants, and cultural and sports facilities in Germany must remain closed until January 10, Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

– If the contagion situation continues to develop as in recent days, we will meet again on January 4 and the federal states will extend the directive (of closure) until January 10, it says after a meeting with the leaders of the 16 states federal.

One month after the introduction of the new restrictions, the spread of the infection in the country has stabilized. But the spread must be further reduced so that authorities can effectively detect the infection and isolate new hotspots, Merkel says.

According to her, Germany can receive deliveries of a total of 70 million doses of vaccine during the first quarter of next year. But that’s not enough for the country’s roughly 80 million inhabitants, and therefore more measures are required, according to Merkel.
