Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Begin mass vaccination against covid-19 next week. President Vladimir Putin has given that order to the Russian authorities. And the Russians are said to be the first in line.
To date, about 10,000 specially selected people in the country have already received the Russian vaccine, called Sputnik V. According to preliminary data from Russia, the vaccine is 92 percent effective in protecting people from the disease.
In the next few days, the country should have produced around two million doses of Sputnik V, according to Putin.
Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova says voluntary vaccinations can start this month.
Moscow is also discussing vaccine deliveries to other countries. But the Kremlin says that Russian citizens must come first.
– The top priority is the Russians, says spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
On Wednesday, Russia recorded 589 new deaths related to covid-19. Since the pandemic broke out, 41,053 deaths have been reported, according to official data.
Just over 2.3 million cases of infection have been detected in the country. But the increase has slowed since late November. Tight restrictions have been introduced during the second wave of spread of the infection.
