It is Salmonella choleraesuis, the same type that was discovered on a pig farm in Skåne earlier this fall, says the Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA) in a press release. However, no further findings of the unusual salmonella have been made in domestic pigs.
The Salmonella variant has not existed in Swedish pig farming for over 40 years. It can cause serious health problems in pigs, but it is very rare for humans to be affected by this type of salmonella.
Protect from contact
“The fact that we now have more cases of established infection by Salmonella choleraesuis among wild boars in different parts of the country is of course serious. It is very important that those who raise domestic pigs protect their herd from all contact with wild boar,” he says. Katharina Gielen according to the press release.
The wild boars that were in the enclosure in Sörmland, 14 animals, have now been euthanized.
At the same time, work is under way to map the infection in the country’s wild boar, and samples are taken from all animals that are found dead or sick. Of the approximately 50 samples SVA has received so far for analysis, four were positive.
