In June last year, an investigation was launched into match-fixing in a Swedish match during the spring 2019 season.
It is now clear that a former Elfsborg player is being prosecuted for bribery. Three other footballers are charged with offenses in other matches, where one case concerns a division 3 player Södra Götaland who has received bribes from a person who made bets.
How does the accusing Allsvenskan player react to this?
– There are several involved in this. The Allsvenskan player denies any wrongdoing. Everyone involved denies the crime, says prosecutor Staffan Edlund.
Gambling law violation
– I have decided to press charges and then I think I have enough evidence for a conviction. I think the evidence here is sufficient.
What are we talking about the penalty scales?
– It is difficult to say before a trial, but it is about giving and receiving bribes, it is about games of chance, and there the maximum penalty is two years in prison for these crimes. Exactly where you land here I can’t say anything.
According to the prosecution, the Swedish player will be prosecuted for accepting a bribe and two people for giving a bribe. All are accused of violating the Gaming Law.
