The UK is the first to approve a corona vaccine.
The government claims that more than 800,000 Britons will be vaccinated next week.
– We will start with the elderly, those who live in nursing homes and their caregivers, says Health Minister Matt Hancock.
The first news came this morning that the UK has approved Pfizer-Biontech’s crown vaccine.
“The government today accepted the recommendation of the independent pharmaceutical authority MHRA to approve Pfizer-Biontech’s covid-19 vaccine for use,” the British government said.
Mass vaccinations will begin next week, according to the country’s Health Minister Matt Hancock. Pfizer claims they will begin shipping the first of 40 million doses purchased in the UK in the next few days, writes The Guardian.
– This approval is the goal we have been working toward since we first said science should win, says Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer.
Hancock says they expect to receive 10 million doses delivered before the end of the year. The corona mass vaccination will be the country’s largest vaccination campaign to date, says the head of the country’s NHS health authority:
“This is an important next step in our management of the coronavirus pandemic and hospitals will soon begin the first phase of the vaccination program,” he told The Guardian.
The United States and Europe are expected to follow the United Kingdom and approve the vaccine in the coming weeks. The United States has ordered 100 million doses and Europe 200 million, writes The Guardian.
Sweden’s vaccine coordinator Rechar Bergström tells TT that the UK’s decision does not affect the EU process. But call it hopeful:
– Now we have received a first approval and it gives more hope that the EU will also approve this vaccine, says Richard Bergström to TT.
– It is possible that this vaccine is approved by the European Commission before the turn of the year, either before Christmas or during the week.
Pfizer’s vaccine must be stored at minus 70 degrees in order not to perish. However, according to the company, it can last up to five days in the refrigerator, between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.
