Trier Police where the incident took place.
Five people have been killed and about 15 injured since an urban jeep hit a pedestrian street in Trier, Germany.
Police arrested the 51-year-old driver who was heavily intoxicated.
Just before 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, a 51-year-old man was driving his dark gray city jeep at high speed down a pedestrian street in central Trier, western Germany.
The vehicle collided with a large number of people during the journey of approximately 900 meters. At least five people have died so far (the death toll could rise further) and around 15 people are seriously injured, according to police. Among the dead is a nine-month-old girl, writes the Volksfreund newspaper.
The man was very intoxicated. Prosecutors say the concentration of alcohol in his blood was measured at 1.4 per thousand.
Unclear reason
Just minutes later, the police were able to arrest the driver in a car street near the pedestrian street. Large parts of the Central Tier were later cordoned off and police with reinforcement weapons moved along the roadblocks.
The man will be questioned overnight, police write in a press release. It is not yet clear what caused the incident. The prosecutor claims that nothing indicates that the 51-year-old man had a political or religious motive.
“He drove with intention”
The man is a resident of the Trier-Saarburg district, where the incident occurred. The police have not known him before.
– At the moment we cannot say anything about the reason. We don’t know why he did it, police spokesman Uwe Konz told a news conference.
Eyewitnesses tell the public service channel SWR that the driver appears to have run over people on purpose.
Later in the evening, residents gathered near the site to light candles and honor the dead.
