Americans love big cars more than the environment

In “A Promised Land,” Barack Obama discusses how the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, killing eleven people and causing one of the largest oil spills in history.

The leak took three months to stop. By then, about five million barrels of crude oil had flowed to the sea and to the coasts. The damage was enormous to wildlife and the marine environment. The then Chancellor of Justice, Loretta Lynch, described what happened as “the worst environmental disaster in the history of the United States.”

Obama: “They have allowed environmentalists to do what they want”

Obama writes in his book about how the press conference he held a month after the explosion far from reflecting how frustrated he really was by the situation. He writes that he wanted to criticize Americans for their unwillingness to pay for technology that could prevent this type of environmental disaster from happening again.

“This technology would be expensive, and Americans don’t like paying higher taxes, especially when it comes to preparing for problems that haven’t happened yet.” writes Obama.

He harshly criticizes US voters for “allowing environmentalists to do whatever they want.” But he also says that the only way to ensure that this type of oil spill does not recur is to “stop drilling altogether” for oil.

“But that would never happen because the truth is that Americans love our cheap gas and big cars more than we care about the environment.”writes Obama.
