On Sunday, Hungarian MEP József Szájer unexpectedly announced his resignation at the turn of the year.

On Tuesday, the explanation came as to why, after he admitted he was the member who was arrested when Belgian police attacked 25 people on Friday who had gathered to party again, despite current crown restrictions.

“I regret breaking the unification rules. It was irresponsible of me,” Szájer wrote according to the daily Dernière Heure.

The Hungarian, however, denies having used drugs at the time, although the police say they have launched an investigation against him for alleged drug possession.

Szájer has represented Hungary’s conservative ruling party, Fidesz, in the European Parliament since 2004.
