The situation of the imprisoned doctor Ahmadreza Djalali has deteriorated dramatically in a short time.

– Last week we received a message that before moving to Raja’i Shahr Prison, he would be placed in solitary confinement in the prison where he has been until now, Evin Prison. It was then that he made a brief call to his wife that he said goodbye, says Ami Hedenborg of the Swedish Amnesty Association.

But now Iran has taken another step towards the death penalty.

– The worrying thing is that we have now received the news that this move has taken place, or is taking place now, he continues.

Use hanging

Ami Hedenborg says that Raja’i Shahr Prison, where he has now been transferred, is the place where the death penalty will likely be carried out.

– It is extremely alarming because then it is even more difficult to influence development. Iran shows with this that they are serious, the prison to which he was transferred is the real place where the death penalty is carried out.

TT: Is there any information on when this can happen?

– Iran uses hanging to carry out the death penalty and usually occurs in the morning, early in the morning. Since you will be on site tomorrow morning, it is in practice possible that it will happen already then.

– There were concerns that the execution would be carried out in secret, but it has been announced that his family in Iran, where his mother is, among others, will receive one last visit. So there is a great risk that it will happen soon, but we are waiting for more information.

Jailed in 2016

Djalali has lived with his family in Sweden since 2009 and defended his dissertation in disaster medicine at the Karolinska Institutet in 2012. He has been in Iranian prison since 2016, when he was arrested by the Iranian intelligence service during a conference trip to the country. Djalali was charged with espionage and sentenced to death in 2017. Since then, he has been imprisoned primarily in the infamous Evin prison, outside the capital Tehran.
