Norway has had its border with Sweden completely closed in principle since March due to the corona pandemic, the border with Värmland was open for a short period during the summer.
Christmas is just a few weeks away and Member of Parliament Kjell-Arne Ottosson (KD) now wants to see a temporary opening of the border so that families living on different sides of the border can celebrate Christmas together, Strömstads Tidning writes.
– Along with loneliness are people with situations of pressure from companies that collapse, layoffs and concerns for the future. The consequences of the pandemic in the form of mental illness may be greater than the illness itself, he tells the newspaper.
To be answered in the Riksdag
Kjell-Arne Ottosson has put the question in writing to the Social Democratic Minister Anna Hallberg (s), who in addition to being Minister of Foreign Trade is responsible for Nordic affairs.
“Does the government intend to take any initiative to, together with the Norwegian government, have a border open temporarily so that immediate families can reunite during the Christmas weekend?”, Ottosson has written, according to Strömstads Tidning.
With my question, I want to look for opportunities where we can find a temporary solution for the Christmas weekend so that families can be reunited safely. When I talk to my Norwegian colleagues from their government, I find an interest in this, Kjell-Arne Ottosson tells the newspaper.
The question will be answered by Anna Hallberg in the Riksdag.
