A total of 6,798 people with confirmed covid-19 have died in Sweden. There are another 117 cases since last Friday, which is the highest number of deaths reported during the second wave of the pandemic.
State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell says the death toll continues to rise.
– It is still a very serious situation, he says.
Anders Tegnell stresses the importance of not increasing the number of patients admitted too quickly.
– It is very important that we now keep this curve down, which we seem to be doing right now. We have a good distance to peak capacity for health care. But it requires that we continue to help with this.
Then comes the Christmas message
Many now hope to receive clearer recommendations on how to behave during the Christmas and New Year holidays due to the pandemic. But this week no information will arrive, says Anders Tegnell.
– Many in authority are working very hard on this at the moment, but sadly we haven’t had time all the way.
– Our assessment is that we will not be able to go out with anything now on Thursday, but it will not be until next week.
Later, during the press conference, Anders Tegnell explains why it has been a while.
– Because it is important that we come out very clearly about what applies. It is also important that we can agree with the regions that are most concerned about this, that receive a large number of visitors and that have relatively few resources in terms of medical care and sampling. We have to make a good compromise so that they feel calm, but that we can also celebrate Christmas in a quite normal way.
