The decision to cancel the competition in 2020 has been made by the Norwegian cross-country ski committee together with the national team leadership, due to the prevailing situation in the crown.

“This is a difficult decision, but after extensive internal discussions, we believe this is the right thing to do for cross-country skiing in the current situation,” says committee chair Torbjørn Skogstad in a press release.

Norway had a team in place during the World Cup premiere in Ruka last week, but after returning home, star Johannes Høsflot Klæbo announced that he does not intend to compete in the World Cup before the change of year.

How the Swedish national ski team not clear yet.

– We work closely with our medical team and discuss the risks and above all how we can do everything possible to minimize the spread of infections. The medical evaluation is of great importance to our decision, says Daniel Fåhraeus, length director of the Swedish Ski Federation in a press release.

An initial assessment of this weekend’s competitions in Ruka shows that both skiers and leaders were satisfied with the efforts made to minimize the number of external contacts.

– We felt safe and we thought it worked well. As long as everything can be done safely, of course we want to compete. It is a pity that Norway does not go, but that does not change our attitude, says Johan Häggström, who represents the drivers in the press release.

The national length team is approaching now to assess the situation competition by competition. A decision on participation in the World Cup competitions in Davos from December 12-13 is expected on Wednesday.

The Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish medical teams have collaborated on the matter and the Swedish Ski Federation is now awaiting their joint statement.
