Lewis Hamilton won last weekend’s spectacular race in Bahrain, where Haas driver Romain Grosjean was involved in an accident in which his car broke in two and then caught fire. Grosjean suffered only minor injuries but will miss race two in Bahrain.
Hamilton is also missing this weekend’s competition. The British have left a positive corona test and have been isolated.
All Formula 1 drivers and other employees in the barn are continuously tested. Hamilton tested negative three times last week, through Sunday afternoon, Mercedes announces.
On Monday morning, he felt mild symptoms and also received the message that a person he had been in contact with before the trip to Bahrain tested positive. The new Hamilton test and also a control test showed an ongoing infection.
Other than mild symptoms, he still feels in good shape, according to Mercedes.
Hamilton is the third F1 driver infected with the coronavirus during the current season, after two Racing Point drivers, Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll.
Mercedes will name Hamilton’s replacement in the race soon.
The final race of the season will be held in Abu Dhabi on December 13.
