In several of the online stores of the largest pharmacy chains, a specific pill is now particularly popular. Vitamin D has become the new gold when the Swedes want to protect themselves against the crown in the second wave of autumn.
– There are still some in the pharmacies, but most of the stock is out of stock and our supplier has great problems getting the raw material. We have a smaller delivery on the way, but there is a risk of shortages later, says Annika Svedberg, Director of Apoteket Hjärtat.
Factory changes
The growing demand, which is 80 percent compared to normal, has led the pharmacy chain’s own factory to have to adjust production and prioritize pills. The explanation is written crown.
“People want to boost their immune system and have read that it can help prevent covid infection, even if it is not scientifically proven,” says Svedberg.

Pharmacy chain Apoteket AB sees the same trend and clear problems. The demand for vitamin D is great internationally, so buyers must work hard to bring it home, says Magnus Frisk, press officer.
– In connection with the increased spread of the infection, sales also increased. In the last two weeks, it has doubled compared to the same period last year. This is a bit of a strange year for us in terms of what people suddenly want to buy, unlike before, like pain relievers this spring, mouth guards, thermometers, and now vitamin D.

No need to accumulate
Stacking vitamin D, in the same way that the Swedes stored toilet paper at the start of the pandemic, is not something Apoteket Hjärtat’s Svedberg recommends.
– May be empty on some shelves and brands for a period. But it must be remembered that there are many multivitamin tablets that have the corresponding amount of vitamin D. You do not need more than that.
